Photographer seeks gardeners for shoot
Gardenwise Magazine would like to feature a total of 6 gardeners from Vancouver community gardens (so one runs for each issue of GardenWise throughout 2011) to be photographed by Jackie Connelly (www.jackieconnelly.com).
For each selected gardener, I need to shoot for:
- lead shot; 3/4 of page with gardener in the garden, working or harvesting,
not necessarily looking at the camera (the character of the personality will dictate – what we don’t want is a ’stiff’ posed look) should have a comfortable casual feel – dirty fingers are great!!
- 4 to 5 detail shots (hands tending to crop, mending fence, plants of interest etc)
- name and contact info of the gardener and garden as well as a signed release form (provided by Jackie) will need to be forwarded by Jackie to Carol@ GardenWise Magazine so Carol may interview-Looking for a wide variety of the population that’s into community gardening – we’d like to here their story as to why they are drawn to it. So it would be ideal if we could have a broad scope of people (visible minority, men, women and an age spread variety)
-All must be photographed by this season end – Jackie is looking at the weekend of July 31st.
-Any community gardener interested in being photographed & interviewed for the magazine should please email Jackie at info@jackieconnelly.com or call 1-866-964-8066. Thank you!
East Van Garden Tour, Sunday, June 20th
Greetings fellow garden lovers!
I’m writing to let you know that this year’s East Van Garden Tour is on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 20th. All the gardens on the tour this year are quite close together and you should be able to walk the entire route. There are 12 gardens on the tour.
You can get your tickets ahead of time at Britannia Centre (1661 Napier Street, 604-718-5800) or at Figaro’s Garden (1896 Victoria Drive, 604-253-1696). You can also get tickets on the day of the tour at Figaro’s (cash only on the day of the tour, however).
As usual, tickets are $10 per person.
The self-guided tour runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
On the day of the tour, go to Figaro’s to pick up your map showing the locations and descriptions of the gardens on the tour.
Note that most gardens are not wheelchair- or stroller-accessible. Children must be either babes in arms or 12 years or older (or, if younger, amazingly well behaved future botanists). Pets are not allowed. Photos are only allowed with the garden owner’s permission.
We will need garden sitters! If you have time to do a three-hour shift (10:00-1:00 or 1:00-4:00) as a garden sitter in one of our beautiful gardens this year, you can take the rest of the tour for free! Please let Pat Davitt know if you’re available (604-253-1885).
If you know of any splendid East Vancouver gardens you would like to nominate for future tours, also contact Pat (604-253-1885).
Proceeds of the East Van Garden Tour go to support the work of Britannia Neighbours, which these days includes the maintenance of the Napier Square Greenway, support for the summer Napier Greenway art fair Artful Sundays (this year Sundays, noon-5:00, Aug 8-Sept 5), sponsorship of a field trip to Van Dusen for a science class at Britannia Elementary, contribution to the upcoming new Britannia Community Centre sign in the Greenway, partnership with Drive Organics to make compost for the Greenway. We thank the Green Streets program of the City of Vancouver Engineering department for its ongoing support.
Let me know if you have any questions.
See you on the tour!
Cheers,

Book signing: Carolyn Herriot’s The Zero-Mile Diet: A Year-Round Guide to Growing Organic Food.
Carolyn Herriot will be doing a talk and book signing on Thursday, June 24
at 5:00 pm at Barbara-Jo’s Books to Cooks (1740 West 2nd Avenue). Tickets
will be $40, this includes refreshments and a signed copy of Carolyn’s new
book, The Zero-Mile Diet: A Year-Round Guide to Growing Organic Food.
It has only taken two generations for the majority of people to forget how
to grow their own food. Most city dwellers have become alienated from the
source of what sustains them, and have little understanding of the
environmental and health impacts of processed and packaged food.
Ten years ago, in order to pacify her concerns about an increasingly
uncertain future, Carolyn Herriot decided to grow as much of her own food as
possible. Carolyn started The Garden Path, a plant nursery and display
garden, in 1990. The Garden Path closed in 2006, and Carolyn now runs Seeds
of Victoria, an organic seed company. In the process of her work with
gardening she has discovered that it only takes five years to become
self-sufficient in fruits and vegetables year round.
The Zero-Mile Diet follows a year of sustainable homegrown food production,
growing healthy organic food, eating seasonal recipes from the garden,
saving seeds for future harvests and putting food by for the winter. Growing
a “Zero-Mile Diet” is a fun way to increase regional food security while
cooling down the planet.
Carolyn Herriot is the author of the bestselling A Year on the Garden Path:
A 52-Week Organic Gardening Guide. She is much in demand as a speaker and
workshop leader on organic gardening in the Pacific Northwest, with regular
columns in GardenWise and Common Ground magazines. Carolyn grows her
certified-organic seed business, Seeds of Victoria, at the Garden Path
Centre for Organic Gardening in Victoria, BC.

The wright stakes for your garden
Via email:
Hello fellow gardeners.
My name is Lori Wright. I am a Horticulturist
and a BSc grad who has happily worked as a self-employed gardener in
West Vancouver for the last 25 years. Staking up perennials has always
been my least favorite gardening task, so I created my own functional,
easy to use garden stakes. There are 7 sizes of solid iron stakes
designed to support and display any perennial or smalll shrub in the
garden. I send you this link in hopes of alleviating any staking pains
that your members may be experiencing as well.
Happy gardening.
Lori.
